General Dentistry

At Cavehill Dental care we are focused on preventing dental problems before they develop wherever possible. Preventive Dentistry involves educating all our patients about their diet and oral hygiene as well as sometimes painting protective coatings (called Fissure Sealants) onto the surface of teeth, particularly for our younger patients.
But when problems do arise we are able to offer the full range of general treatment options. These may include:

A Crown is a cap of covering that is placed over the entire surface of the tooth and can be made from a number of materials. There are many indications for crowning a tooth. These can be due to cosmetic considerations but most are due to a lack of remaining tooth structure. If a tooth is broken down or heavily filled, the crown is placed to protect the tooth from the high biting forces we exert on our teeth whilst eating.

Not all crowns are the same and we provide gold crowns, porcelain bonded to gold crowns as well as the latest in the metal free alternatives that give truly lifelike results. The latest advances in porcelain allows light to transmit through the crown, thereby creating a restoration that is undetectable from the other natural teeth in your smile. With the absence of any metal core on the inside of the crown, there will be no more tell tale grey lines that are usually seen with the older metal ceramic crowns. If a crown is required we will discuss all suitable options with you and you can decide how you wish to proceed.

A bridge will use the teeth on either side of the gap to anchor on to. It will only be possible if the teeth to support the bridge are strong enough and if they have good bone support. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared, crowns are placed over the prepared teeth and these are attached to the artificial tooth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.

Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.
